Wild wild encaged animals

Through a mixture of the zoo article and the Blackfish trailer, the class was put in a situation in which part of our culture was attacked by animal activists. Wether we were to agree or disagree with what was being said about the treatment of animals for human entertainment, we can’t deny the guilt we feel as an individual in a society that consists of structures like zoos, aquariums, and places like Sea world. As the article uses intense language that taps into pathos, and breaks down the logic of why zoos are so harmful to animals and unnecessary to humans through logos, we can’t help but see why many argue that zoos are a harmful place for animals that exist solely for human entertainment. The documentary trailer further uses logos through facts and real situations that happened not too long ago. This trailer does a better job arguing that institutions like these shouldn’t exist and animals should roam free because it’s using real life proof that these animals are in deep distress, and it can even be harmful to humans because of how dangerous these animals can be especially when provoked in the wrong way, because they’re meant to be habituating the wild, not being controlled by humans. The way that the texts and video was revealed to the class was also done in a very credible manner, causing me to go into reading the article and watching the video already wanting to believe what they were going to say and argue for. As an English teacher who has clearly read and been exposed to thousands of books and articles from an academic standpoint, we already believe as a class that what we are given to read and analyze has been approved by scholars, and comes from real databases and credible sources. Personally, I agree with the argument that the article and trailer set up. I don’t think we should be taking these animals out of their natural habitat, encaging them and removing them from their family and way of life just for human entertainment.

Blog 2- Symbols of America

The image I’ll be analyzing for my visual analysis is Dread Scott’s ‘What Is The Proper Way To Display a US Flag’. Dread Scott created this interactive art instillation where viewers can go up to the book and write about their impressions on the exhibit and views about the US flag in a book. Viewers have the option to walk on top of the flag or stand at the side of it in order to get to the book, which is placed below an image of flags being burned on the wall. I’d like to analyze the setup of the exhibit, specifically the placement of the flag. I’ll also be discussing wether or not Dread Scott’s bias influences viewers, and how he infuses his views on social and political injustice into the exhibit, further discussing how it influences viewer’s responses. I’ll be looking into the context of the times and how the social and political climate of America in 1988 influenced the reaction and controversy surrounding this work of art.

Persuasion of Social Media

Although I’m not a dedicated social media user, I find that what you are exposed to and affected by on social networks is really what you make of it. I personally am most affected by what I see on instagram, the only social media app I check once a day. I follow more artistic accounts, comedians, music news and other funny accounts just to get a laugh in throughout the day than random people I meet or influencers. I’ve built my feed to be a positive experience, and often find myself laughing or gaining inspiration from something when I’m scrolling through the app. Overall, I just casually look at the app for a laugh or to see cool things when I have the time and think to check it, so wouldn’t say that my lifestyle is really influenced by what I’m seeing on social media but believe that social media can be obsessive for a lot of people, which is why I encourage everyone to build a feed that’s enjoyable to them. It’s so easy to get caught up in what everyone is doing, wearing, seeing and everything else on apps like these, but is also just as easy to only see what’s enjoyable to you. I make a point to unfollow accounts and people that I never see or don’t find enjoyable to look at anymore which helps cut out all the unnecessary information and posts that I don’t care to see. Personally I’m a fan of social media and think that it’s a great resource in today’s world as long as you take a minute to think about what you’re following and how it affects you.
