The image I’ll be analyzing for my visual analysis is Dread Scott’s ‘What Is The Proper Way To Display a US Flag’. Dread Scott created this interactive art instillation where viewers can go up to the book and write about their impressions on the exhibit and views about the US flag in a book. Viewers have the option to walk on top of the flag or stand at the side of it in order to get to the book, which is placed below an image of flags being burned on the wall. I’d like to analyze the setup of the exhibit, specifically the placement of the flag. I’ll also be discussing wether or not Dread Scott’s bias influences viewers, and how he infuses his views on social and political injustice into the exhibit, further discussing how it influences viewer’s responses. I’ll be looking into the context of the times and how the social and political climate of America in 1988 influenced the reaction and controversy surrounding this work of art.
